This comes directly from the Ghost 15.0 manual. There is an option available during recovery from the Symantec Recovery disk. Restore master boot record option 'Restores the master boot record.
The master boot record is contained in the first sector of a physical hard disk. The master boot record consists of a master boot program and a partition table that describes the disk partitions. Norton Ghost 15 Does anyone use Norton Ghost 15? I am currently just using the built in backup with Win7. I have used Ghost in the past (well then it named Norton Save & Restore) and had a lot of luck. BUT I have read mixed reviews with Ghost 15. Backup and Restore: How to use norton ghost(Win 7 Professional).
It then starts the boot program from the boot sector of the active partition. This option is recommended only for advanced users and is available only if you restore a whole drive in the recovery environment. Select this option if any of the following situations are true: ¦ You are restoring a recovery point to a new, empty hard disk.
¦ You are restoring a recovery point to the original drive, but the drive's partitions were modified since the recovery point was created. ¦ You suspect that a virus or some other problem has corrupted your drive's master boot record.' There is also an option you can select during the recovery from The Recovery Disk that will delete the hardrive prior to recovering. Delete Drive Option 'Delete a selected drive in the list to make space available to restore your recovery point. When you click Delete Drive, the drive is only marked for deletion. The actual deletion of the drive takes place after you click Finish in the wizard.'
You can find the manual here. Hope this helps.
Yes nightowl, I did go through the Ghost 9 Manual ( and thus NG 2003-since NG 2003 is included w/ Ghost 9), as that is the official (legit) version of Norton Ghost that I have. Both those manuals (NG 2003 + Ghost 9) do mention support for Linux (ext2 & ext3) file systems, as mentioned by you above. However, I have never been able to get NG 2003 to detect ext3 Linux partitions for openSUSE 11.1 (see sig).
I use the ext4 FS type for Ubuntu 9.04, so Ghost won't detect it, as NG doesn't (yet) support ext4, from a boot CD as I mentioned above. So, apparently NG 2003 did not work for me. And currently am using Clonezilla Live CD for imaging, which works great as given at thread: Not only Linux, it also works well with Windows XP (details at the post above). You might want to give it a spin yourself sometime.
The one disadvantage is inability to browse the created image files (unlike with Ghost Explorer). Will try out the NG 2003 boot CD once more, since this install is on a new hard disk, and possibly that might make a difference.
